Garden room electrics are an essential part of creating a space that can be comfortably used throughout the year.
Whether you are building a garden office, gym, studio or entertainment room, you will need a safe and reliable power supply for lighting, sockets, heating and other electrical equipment.
A modern garden room should offer the same convenience you expect inside your house. That means planning the electrical installation early, choosing the right number of sockets and lights and making sure all electrical work is completed safely.

What Electrics Does a Garden Room Need?
The exact garden room electrics you need depend on what you plan to do inside the building.
A simple garden retreat may only require lights and a few double sockets. A garden office could need additional sockets for computers, monitors and other equipment, while a garden gym may need power for an electric heater, television, power tools, exercise equipment or an air conditioning unit.

How Do You Run Electricity to a Garden Room?
In most cases, electricity is supplied from the main house to the garden building using a suitably designed cable.
An electrician will assess the existing electrical system and house consumer unit before determining the best solution. A power load assessment helps establish the anticipated electrical demand, while the cable needed will depend on factors such as the distance between the house and garden room, expected load and installation method.
Armoured cable is commonly used for external cable runs because it provides additional mechanical protection. Where appropriate, the cable may be buried underground between the house and garden room. In a typical household garden, guidance recommends a burial depth of around 500 mm to reduce the risk of damage from normal gardening activity, although greater depths may be appropriate depending on the conditions.
The position of the building, surrounding garden and features such as a fence can also influence the most practical cable route across the site.
Longer cable runs require careful planning. Runs beyond 20 metres, for example, may affect the cable size required because factors such as voltage drop need to be considered. Electric heating can also significantly increase the anticipated load and influence cable and protective device requirements.
There is therefore no single armoured cable size that is suitable for every garden room. Your electrician should calculate the correct specification for the installation.
An extension lead from the house is not an appropriate substitute for a professionally designed permanent electrical installation.
Does a Garden Room Need a Consumer Unit?
Many garden room electrical systems incorporate a small consumer unit within the building. This provides local protection and allows individual circuits within the room to be controlled appropriately.
The garden room consumer unit is connected as part of the wider electrical system, with the exact arrangement determined according to the existing house consumer unit, proposed circuits and anticipated electrical demand.
Depending on the design, the electrician may install a new circuit from the house to provide the required supply. The internal installation could then contain separate circuits for different electrical requirements. The chosen electrician will determine the appropriate arrangement for the individual job rather than assuming the same setup, such as a ring main, is suitable for every garden room.
RCD protection is another important part of electrical safety. A Residual Current Device rapidly disconnects the supply under certain fault conditions, helping to reduce the risk of electric shock. Socket outlets rated up to 32A generally require additional protection by a 30 mA RCD under BS 7671.
Earthing arrangements must also be considered as part of the design. The correct solution depends on the existing supply and installation, and in some circumstances a separate local earthing arrangement may be appropriate.
In some cases, work to the existing fuse box or a new consumer unit may be required, particularly where an older property does not have suitable capacity or protection. This is something a qualified electrician should establish before the installation begins.
First Fix and Second Fix Garden Room Electrics
Electrical installation usually takes place over different stages of the garden room build process.
First fix wiring takes place while the internal structure is still accessible. At this stage, the electrician can install cables and plan the position of sockets, switches, lights and other electrical points before the walls are completely finished.
Planning the first fix properly is important because all the cables need to be positioned according to the final room layout. For example, you do not want to discover after installation that a double socket is hidden behind fitted furniture or that a switch is in an inconvenient position.
Socket height can also be considered at this stage. Depending on how the room will be used, some sockets may be positioned around waist height rather than close to floor level, particularly where this makes them more convenient above a desk or work surface.
The second fix takes place later in the build. Sockets, switches, light fittings and other visible components can then be connected and finished.

Planning Garden Office Electrics
Garden office electrics deserve particular attention because modern home working can involve considerably more equipment than people initially expect.
A bespoke garden office might need sockets for a desktop computer, multiple monitors, chargers, a printer, speakers, lighting, heating and Wi-Fi equipment.
Think about where your desk will sit before deciding where sockets should go. Positioning sockets around the intended workspace helps reduce trailing cables and extension leads.
You should also consider lighting. Natural light is important in a garden office, but good internal lights are still essential during darker winter mornings and evenings in Scotland.
Heating is another consideration if the office will be used year round. Electric heaters and underfloor heating can increase the electrical load, so they should form part of the initial planning rather than simply being added later.
Any electrical accessories exposed to moisture or outdoor conditions should also be selected with an appropriate IP rating for their location.
Can You Install Garden Room Electrics Yourself?
Electrical work is one area where taking shortcuts can create serious safety risks.
A permanent electrical installation should be properly designed, installed, inspected and tested by someone with the appropriate technical knowledge, practical skills and experience. Electrical installations should be completed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS 7671, the UK standard for electrical installations.
Using a qualified, certified or registered electrician means the cable, circuits, connections and protective equipment can be selected according to the requirements of the installation. Once qualifying new electrical installation work is complete, you should also receive the appropriate electrical certification, such as an Electrical Installation Certificate.
If you are researching garden room electrics online, you may see frequent references to Part P, notifiable work and an electrician registered to self certify electrical work. Part P relates to electrical safety requirements for dwellings in England and should not be confused with the Scottish building standards system.
In Scotland, different building standards and certification arrangements apply. Where a building warrant is relevant, an Approved Certifier of Construction can certify qualifying electrical installation work as complying with the applicable building regulations.
For a specific project, requirements should always be checked against the current Scottish regulations and, where necessary, with the relevant local authority.
Do Building Regulations Apply to Garden Room Electrics?
The requirements depend on the building and the work being undertaken.
Scottish building regulations set standards for electrical safety, and the Scottish Government's technical guidance covers fixed wiring, associated components, fittings and permanently secured electrical equipment.
Not every piece of electrical work automatically means a building warrant is required. However, work that does not require a warrant can still be required to meet relevant building regulations.
This distinction is particularly important when reading general UK advice online, as the legal requirements are not identical across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

How Much Do Garden Room Electrics Cost?
As a broad guide, a basic garden room electrical setup may cost around £600 to £900, while a mid-range installation could be approximately £1,000 to £1,500. More extensive high-spec installations can exceed £1,500 and potentially reach £3,000 or more.
Connection costs alone can also be around £600 to £800 in some cases. These figures should only be treated as indicative because the actual cost of garden room electrics varies considerably between projects.

Amount of digging required for the cable route
Number of sockets and lights
